People power in Canton

Children in the Religious Education program at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Canton, organized People Power Day on Easter Sunday. As part of their unit on protecting the earth and putting their faith into action, students in the 3rd to 5th grade class encouraged church members to consider traveling to church using less fossil fuel. Using a range of fuel-saving approaches, more than 70 people traveled over 500 miles to the church on East Main Street in Canton. Some highlights included Jan Hutslar, the church’s Director of Religious Education, who kayaked from Pyrites in the fast-flowing Grasse River, and three families with young children who bicycled from Potsdam, including the Siegfried-Powers family—Sue, Tera (10), Ellie (14), and Will.
