CANTON -- A professional development workshop for local teachers with a focus on strategies to improve STEM learning will be held at St. Lawrence University Aug. 4 and 5, sponsored by Nature Up North, an environmental education initiative based at the university.
The object is to engage students in hands-on outdoor lessons in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through citizen science.
Topics covered will include using the outdoors as a classroom, developing an interdisciplinary curriculum through nature-based learning, and integrating citizen science and outdoor learning with the Common Core.
St. Lawrence County teachers of third through 12th grades, in all subject areas, are encouraged to apply. Participation is free. Teachers will be given a stipend for participating in the workshop.
Space is limited. Visit http://natureupnorth.or/teacherworkshop or contact Nature Up North Project Manager Jake Malcomb at jmalcomb@stlawu.edu for details on how to register.
The workshop is made possible by a grant from the ALCOA Foundation.
