CANTON -- A workshop to inform landlords about proper evictions and understanding tenants' rights is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in the county Human Services Building, 80 State Highway 310.
Massena attorney Daniel S. Pease of the law firm Pease & Gustafson, LLP, presents an overview of proper tenant evictions. Deanna R. Nelson, Assistant Attorney General in Charge of the Watertown Regional Office will review New York State tenant’s rights.
The workshop was developed in response to participants of a 2010 meeting in Ogdensburg on housing issues. They recommended increasing public understanding about a person’s rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. “The intent of the workshop is to ensure landlords won’t violate a tenant’s housing rights when they need to proceed with an eviction,” said Matilda M. Larson, a Planner II who staffs the county’s Fair Housing Task Force. “By informing landlords of proper eviction procedures, we are striving to protect a tenant’s rights to decent, affordable housing.”
