CANTON -- A women's personal safety and self-defense class will be presented in the multipurpose room of St. Lawrence University's Newell Fitness Center on Monday, Feb. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. SLU students, staff members, and women of the community are invited to attend. Topics will include awareness techniques, avoidance, escapes, throws, strikes, and safety concepts for traveling. Students in grades 9 through 12 may participate if accompanied by a parent.
No previous training in self-defense is needed for involvement in the program. The two hour seminar will be taught in a respectful manner, according to American Kang Duk Won Karate’s Frank Palumbo.
Women who participate are asked to wear loose fitting clothing and appropriate exercise footwear.
Sign-ups may be completed with Robin Durocher at the SLU Fitness Office (229-5415) or on the evening of the presentation. Groups should call in advance.
Cost for the women's safety seminar is $20 for staff and community members, $10 for SLU students.
The self-defense presentation will be conducted by black belt instructors of American Kang Duk Won Karate. Regional karate and safety programs are taught in Canton, Madrid, Heuvelton, and Ogdensburg. For details on family lessons call 386-3029.
