CANTON -- Farmers are invited to learn about Whole Farm Revenue Protection crop insurance from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension St. Lawrence County Extension Learning Farm on State Rt. 68.

The new Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program buy-up improvements program will also be discussed in the program.

Risk management educator Charles Koines will cover how to use Schedule F tax reporting to show average income on a whole farm basis and the options to select insurance for 50 percent to 85 percent loss to secure Whole Farm Revenue Protection crop insurance. Replanting coverage will also be discussed.

USDA St. Lawrence County Farm Service Agency Director Clark Putnam will present the new Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program buy-up improvements that include added quality to the coverage for hay production and provide weather-related yield losses for all other crops, including honey and maple sap. Four coverage levels are available. Farmers who qualify as Limited Resource, Beginning Farmers, and Socially Disadvantaged producers are eligible for waive of the administrative fee and reduced premiums.

“The disaster payments of the past are gone,” said workshop co-organizer Anita Deming, a farm business management specialist and executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Essex County. “Farmers need to participate in subsidized crop and income insurance programs just as we do fire or flood insurance. The November 12 workshop will help farmers understand what types of insurance are best for their business.”
