POTSDAM -- In the final two repeat shows from 2014, North Country Matters looks at the county’s food assets and the Workforce Development Institute on WCKN, Time Warner Digital Channel 30, on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 19 and 20. The first show, aired at 7:30 p.m. both nights, is a conversation with Heather Sullivan-Catlin, the lead researcher and author of St. Lawrence County Community Food Security Assessment done in partnership with GardenShare.

The report looks into the extent of hunger in our county, barriers to food access, and the resources available to residents in need. Sullivan-Catlin, an associate professor of Sociology at SUNY Potsdam, has long been interested in family and community issues. She served as president of GardenShare, a non-profit community food security organization, from 2008-13. She discussed her findings with NCM host Donna Seymour, the key issues about food insecurity and hunger in St. Lawrence County, and some of the report’s recommendations for addressing those needs. The second show follows at 8 p.m. with Greg Hart, the executive director of the North Country Region Workforce Development Institute in Massena. The WDI is a non-profit that provided targeted programs in workforce, economic, and community development. Hart discusses its programs and projects, how it benefits the local economic development, its focus on safety, job training, women in the workforce and STEM education for students. New shows will include Gloria McAdam, the new executive director of GardenShare, and Teen Dating Awareness Month with Caitlin Hill and Val Dana from Renewal House. You can watch the new shows on WCKN starting the week of January 26.
