POTSDAM -- Anyone age 16 and up can join local artist Peggy Mooers to learn about how to use watercolor journaling. Her class will meet July 19 from 9 a.m. to noon and July 26 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $54, with discounted rates for St. Lawrence County Arts Council members or those in need of financial assistance. When registering, students should ask for a list of materials. Classes meet in room 229, Downtown Snell Hall, 41 Elm St. Pre-registration is required: 265-6860 or go to www.slcartscouncil.org and click "Calendar."

In the first class, Mooers will guide painting exercises for students who have some beginning or intermediate watercolor painting experience. In a 90-minute follow-up class the next week, students will discuss successes and challenges they encountered while practicing watercolor journaling on their own. Mooers will discuss ways the images and knowledge gained from keeping a watercolor journal can be applied or incorporated into future painting projects.

Keeping a watercolor journal encourages students to paint on their own and improve their skills over time by connecting with their world and recording their experiences in small ways on a daily basis, a news release from SLC Arts says. This is often less daunting for students than watercolor classes alone which may have the pressure to create a finished work under a deadline without practice or application interspersed between sessions, SLC Arts said.
