Waddington Homecoming continues through the weekend with diaper derby, lip sync contest, classic rock band

WADDINGTON -- Waddington Homecoming continues Friday night and through the weekend featuring a diaper derby, lip sync contest and live music from a classic rock band.

The official opening ceremony is set for 6 p.m. in the town hall square. The diaper derby will follow at 6 p.m. Babies will be broken down into age divisions and be placed, two at a time, to crawl or walk to a finish line. Contestants will go in heats until a winner emerges.

A lip sync contest will be at 7 p.m. in the town hall square. Participants can register at 6 p.m. he day will round out with a performance from Atomic Precipitation, a band from Waddington who plays classic rock numbers.

Other planned activities include a sand castle contest, inflatables, live bands, a 5K run, soapbox derby-style races, fireworks, a parade, food and more.

Saturday will begin with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Methodist church. At 7:30, those who want to run or walk in a 5K can sign up for the 9 a.m. event. It starts at Island View Park. The library will continue its book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 10 a.m., kids ages 5 to 12 can partake in a No Octane Go-Kart race on Pine Street. It is similar to a soapbox derby. There is a car to use for anyone who doesn't have their own. All racers must bring their own bike helmet. There will be two divisions, ages 5 to 8 and 9 to 12.

For those who want to get in some physical fitness, there will be a PiYo (Pilates and yoga) class at Island View Park from 10 to 11 a.m. A craft, antique and flea market show in the town hall square, an art show at the former elementary school and a dunk tank at the town hall square will each go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The bounce houses will be back in action from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Waddington fire department will offer festival-goers a chance to fill their stomachs at an 11 a.m. chicken barbeque at the fire hall. At the same time, Donna Miller will perform at the gazebo and a car show will fire up at the Island View Park and go unit 2 p.m.

From 1:30 to 2 p.m., Step It Out Dance will offer dancing in the town hall square. Main Street will become a race track starting at 2:30 p.m. for the bed races. At the same time, the Amazing E-Race, a contest where participants square off in timed events, will be at the town hall square. The event's theme is "A Salute to Small Town Schools."

A parade will get underway at 6 p.m. and march from Lagrasse Street to Island View Park. Lineup is at 5 p.m. on Linden and Fenton streets. It will be followed by live music from the Double Barrel Blues Band at 7 p.m. and the 15th duck race at 8 p.m. The day will close with a bang, as a fireworks show will start art dusk at Island View Park.

Sunday starts with an Ecumenical church service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 9 a.m. A community picnic catered by the Seaway Smokehouse will be served at the town beach at noon. Seaway Valley Jumpers will run a water slide from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the town beach.

A cupcake war, where anyone can submit their cupcakes to be judged by a panel, will start at 1 p.m. at the town beach. The final Homecoming event will be a tube race at 2 p.m., going from the town beach to Island View Park.
