Vocal Skies Sacred Harp will perform Dec. 7 at TAUNY’S holiday open house, 53 Main St., Canton at 11:30 a.m. and at Pickens Hall, 83 State St., Heuvelton at 3:30 p.m.

The group will give two short concerts of 18th and 19th century Christmas hymns.

The morning concert will run about 25 minutes; the afternoon concert will run about 45 minutes.

Sacred Harp, sometimes called “Shape-Note” singing is a traditional form of group or community singing. The songs are based on the melodies, harmonies, and texts of the early settlers of our nation.

Because it was intended for amateur singers, who were singing worship music, it has a very powerful and raw sound with unusual rhythms and harmonies.

Vocal Skies is an open ensemble of singers from the Canton area who meet weekly to sing from the Sacred Harp tradition.
