OGDENSBURG – The Society of the United Helpers will be hosting its second annual “Ride for the Residents” Motorcycle Poker Run on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. at RiverLedge, 8101 State Rt. 68. Cost is $20 for the rider and $15 for the passenger, which includes a poker hand and a steak dinner.

“The Ride for the Residents Motorcycle Poker is not just a fundraiser, it also serves as a social event for the residents,” said Development Director Lori Smithers. She said the event provides residents a chance to get outside, take a look at the bikes, and talk with the drivers and riders.

The 116-mile ride will start at 11 a.m. at RiverLedge and make stops at St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena, United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton, Amvets in Heuvelton and ends at Amvets in Ogdensburg. Hot dogs and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at Maplewood.

Activities for the day include 50/50 raffles and prizes from many local area businesses including a chance to win a cottage rental with use of a boat on Black Lake for one week, donated by North Country Cottages & Campgrounds; a 42” flat screen television, donated by Walmart and the Poker Run Committee; a two-way bike communicator, donated by Moody Rivers Cycle; an Uncle Sam Boat Tour package with a picnic basket; and a motorcycle jacket donated by Fun Unlimited.

A motorcycle enthusiast and an avid watcher of Orange County Choppers, RiverLedge resident Eugene Jones is looking forward to the event this year.

“I used to ride a 1949 Harley Davidson Model 61,” said Jones. “It had a hand shift, suicide clutch and a kick start. I didn’t get a chance to see the bikes last year, but I will definitely be outside to see the bikes this year.”
