CANTON -- Local canoe builder Bill Sommerfield will teach a class on how to build an ultra-light canoe that will weigh only 12 to 14 pounds, with a capacity of 190 pounds carrying weight.
A public interest session will be held on Wednesday, April 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Interested individuals are asked to contact the Local Living Venture for the exact location. The assembly of the boat is planned for two to three weekend workshops beginning in mid-April. The introduction free and the workshop sessions will cost $50 per person.
Attendees will leave with the skills needed to build these canoes, based on J. Henry Rushton's ultralight wood canoes, circa 1900. One 1"x6'x12' board makes most of the boat. They are covered in a translucent heat-shrink aircraft fabric.
The project takes 40 hours to build, and costs about $350.
Sommerfield has taught since 1970, and has built many of these ultra-light canoes over the years.
