POTSDAM -- The Community Performance Series will present a weekend of music and dance, featuring the Luna Negra Dance Theater and Turtle Island Quartet Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.

The Luna Negra Dance Theater will collaborate with the Turtle Island Quartet on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam’s Snell Music Theater for a world-premiere performance.

Turtle Island Quartet will then perform the “Have You Ever Been…?” program, celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall. A pre-concert lecture will feature a member of the quartet at 6:30 p.m.

The Jan. 31 performance will feature a world-premiere piece by Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan, with an encore performance Feb. 1. Magadan’s newest work will be performed to live music by the Turtle Island Quartet. Additional dances performed will include “The Naked Ape,” also choreographed by Fernando Hernando Magadan, and “18+1,” which was choreographed by Luna Negra Dance Theater’s Artistic Director, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano.

Two-time Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island will perform “Have You Ever Been…?” Feb. 2. The performance will feature the ensemble’s arrangements of works by guitarist, songwriter, and performer Jimi Hendrix. The program will also feature compositions reflective of and inspired by Hendrix’s music, including Turtle Island Quartet founder David Balakrishnan’s new composition, “Tree of Life.”

Tickets for the Luna Negra Dance Theater performances are $20 or $25 for adults. Tickets for the Turtle Island Quartet performance are $18 to $30 for adults. Discounts are available for seniors and students. A 15% discount is offered to those wishing to attend both performances by contacting the box office.
