CANTON -- “Turkey Day’ in St. Lawrence County refers not to Thanksgiving, but to the day before the holidays when farm families brought their turkeys to towns like Depeyster, Lisbon, and Heuvelton to be sold to poultry dealers.

The turkeys were then transported by railroad to big cities and sold to become the center of holiday feasts in places like Boston and New York City.

Learn more on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Second Saturday Children’s Program at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St. at 11 a.m.

Kids will hear stories of Turkey Day, learn how farm kids helped to raise the turkeys, make a pinecone turkey, and do the turkey trot.

Admission is free and the program is geared for kids ages 4-10, and their parents or caregivers.
