Trustees from Potsdam's Bayside Cemetery to discuss the graveyard's 150-year history in Canton

CANTON -- This year marks the 150th Anniversary of Potsdam’s Bayside Cemetery, which was established by Potsdam residents in 1865 under the leadership of Thomas Clarkson Sr. and Bloomfield Usher.

Learn more when Bayside Cemetery Association trustees John and Susan Omohundro speak at the SLCHA’s next Patricia Harrington Carson Brown Bag Lunch Series at noon on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St.

Brown bag lunches are free and open to the public. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a beverage and dessert provided by SLCHA.

Susan Omohundro first became interested in Potsdam sandstone buildings after purchasing a historic sandstone home in 1983. Since that time, she has conducted extensive research on sandstone buildings around St. Lawrence County and completed several successful applications for the National Register of Historic Places, including one for the Bayside Cemetery.

Susan currently serves as a trustee of Bayside Cemetery Association and a member of the editorial board of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Quarterly journal. John Omohundro was a professor of Cultural Anthropology at SUNY Potsdam for 38 years, specializing in Environmental Studies. John is currently a trustee and website manager for the Bayside Cemetery Association, and serves as Editor of the SLCHA’s Quarterly journal.
