HELENA -- Tritown Trailblazers, a St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association club, host a snowmobile safety class for young people at the Helena Fire Hall on State Rt. 37C Saturday.

The class will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., taught by Melissa Dishaw. Lunch will be provided.

The New York State Young Operator Snowmobile Safety Course is for people age 10 through 17, taught by experienced snowmobilers who volunteer their time to make the sport safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

It provides fundamental information which all snowmobilers should possess in order to ensure the safety of riders and other trail users. Successful completion of this course results in the award of a state Snowmobile Safety Certificate.

Youth ages 14 through 17 years old may operate a snowmobile where snowmobiling is allowed without supervision if they have completed a snowmobile safety-training course recognized by the state. Those aged 14 to 17 who have not completed the course may operate a snowmobile if accompanied within 500 feet by someone who is at least 18 years old.

Youth ages 10 through 13 may operate a snowmobile where the sleds are allowed if they have completed a state-recognized safety training course and are accompanied within 500 feet by a person at least 18 years old.

Children up to age 14 without a safety certificate may operate a snowmobile only on lands owned or leased by their parent or guardian.

Those who want to attend should call Dishaw at 705-4905.
