COLTON -- The town of Colton will be abuzz with community activities this summer as the Sunday Rock Legacy Project commemorates Colton with performances beginning June 14.

The commemoration will focus on the building of the hydroelectric power dams and marks the incorporation of the century-old Colton Fire Department with a theme that weaves the rhythm of music with the rhythm of the Raquette River and the communities along it.

The Grasse River Players will present an original murder mystery dinner theatre by Art Johnson called “The Bottle River Dam Mystery.” The show will be held Sunday, June 14 from 3 until 6 p.m. at Mike’s South of the Rock Inn in South Colton. The plot centers around Dr. Letchworth Allsweet who wants to evict the Center for Occult Research so he can sell his land to the builders of the hydro plant. And, with the dam there, he’ll have a nice lake on his property. But…there is a murder. “Who dun it?” The audience will decide. Anyone who hasn’t made a reservation and wishes to attend will be included based upon remaining available seats. Tickets are $30 and includes dinner, tax and gratuity. Reservations: Mike’s Inn at 262-2178.

On Saturday, June 27 at 7 p.m., a Sock Rock Cabaret will be presented at the Zion Episcopal Church, Main Street in Colton. Since much of the dam building along the Raquette took place in the 1950s, the rhythms of the ‘50s will be celebrated in song and dance. In conjunction with TAUNY, there will be stories revolving around the building of dams and the changes in the community. Special guests will be firemen who will share some of their stories. Donations will be accepted0. Immediately following the Cabaret, there will be a reception and the opening of the new exhibit at the Colton Museum, next door to the church, honoring the century-old Colton Fire Department.

The theatrical production of “I Love A Piano,” with music and lyrics of Irving Berlin features the rhythm of the piano through the 20th century. The musical will be performed at the Colton-Pierrepont Central School auditorium Thursday and Friday, July 16, 17 at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance Sunday, July 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Ticket outlets will be announced in June and tickets may also be purchased at the door.

The Sock Rock Cabaret will be presented again following a parade on Main Street during Colton Country Day on Saturday, July 18 at 3:30 p.m. Fireworks in the evening sponsored by the Higley Association will close the day’s festivities.

The Sunday Rock Legacy Project is a collaborative effort of the Colton Historical Society, Colton-Pierrepont Central School and the Grasse River Players to embrace local history, education and theatre.

Fund raising activities are under way to raise the balance needed for the stage show and other activities. The Sunday Rock Legacy Project accepts volunteers and contributions. Contacts are Scott Muller at wormeater@mail.com or 244-9956 and Ruth McWilliams at ruth@catamountlodge.com or 262-2450.
