Top skiers, bobsled racers to compete soon in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID -- Lots of winter activities are planned by the Olympic Regional Development Authority at its Olympic Jumping Complex, Whiteface Mountain, and the Olympic Arena.

• Jan. 19-21 -- The world’s best freestyle skiers compete in the FIS Nature Valley Freestyle World Cup. Action will take place at the Olympic Jumping Complex and Whiteface Mountain. The jumping complex will host the men and women’s aerials competitions, where athletes twist and soar as high as 60 feet in the air before landing, while Whiteface, in Wilmington, will be the site of the moguls’ competitions.

• Feb. 4 -- Nordic skiers will converge on the cross-country ski trails at Mt. Van Hoevenberg to compete in the 30th annual Lake Placid Loppet. Open to classical and freestyle skiers, the Loppet is a 50k race (31-miles) through the 1980 Olympic ski trails. Because this course was designed for Olympic competition, it is more challenging than most citizen race courses. The altitude ranges from 1,860 feet to 2,460 feet with the longest single climb being 230 vertical feet. The total vertical climb is just under 3,700 feet. And the 25-kilometer Kort Loppet, also open for classical and freestyle skiers, features a vertical climb of 1,850 feet. The Lake Placid Loppet is part of the American Ski Marathon Series.

• Feb. 13-27 -- World championship bobsled and skeleton action returns to the Mt. Van Hoevenberg sliding complex. In 1949, Lake Placid became the first village outside of Europe to host a world championship event. Since then, the two-time Olympic village has staged eight world championship races, most recently in 2009, when Steve Holcomb piloted his four-man sled to victory, claiming the United States’ first four-man crown since 1959.

• March 16-17 -- The NCAA’s Div. III men’s ice hockey champion will be crowned in Lake Placid. The nation’s top four Div. III teams will vie for the crown in Lake Placid.

Other events this fall and winter include ISI Figure Skating Competition, Jan. 13-15; the 32nd annual Empire State Winter Games, Feb. 2-5; and Americas Cup bobsled and skeleton racing, March 30-April 1.
