'Thirty 1 & Mandolin' playing in Canton Saturday in memory of Ortha Sibbitts

CANTON -- “Thirty 1 & Mandolin” will perform a benefit concert Saturday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 41 Court St.

The benefit will raise funds for the Church and Community Program of Canton and for the Ortha Sibbitts Steeple Roof Fund at Canton UMC.

Having known each other most of their lives, “Thirty 1 & Mandolin” is a 6-piece eclectic group from Malone who formed in 2010.

Their roots stem from 80’s and 90’s rock, soul, country, and bluegrass to the tunes of today. They put on a high energy show, according to a press release.

Refreshments will be available.

"We also hope this invitation will convey how much Ortha’s family, friends, and congregation want to honor her memory and fulfill her wish to see the steeple restored to its full beauty and prominence.

An account of Ortha’s personal story and activities certainly reflects an admirably full and busy life, graduating from Canton ATC; running a dairy farm for over 40 years with husband Ron; raising five children and watching the family grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren; attending the Canton UMC for 69 years, joining the Canton Garden Club, the Canton Senior Club, and many other organizations; working for St. Lawrence Dining Services; and volunteering for the Church & Community Program, the 4-H Program, the Dairy Princess Committee, and other community agencies.

What made Ortha truly extraordinary was the deep and abiding joy she found in her Christian faith and how it inspired her to infuse every action and every relationship with an abundance of generosity and love. When someone was in trouble, the Ortha and Ron “team” were always the first on the scene to help.

When the Church Bazaar needed baked goods, Ortha would bake dozens of her justifiably famous pies that sold out within minutes. When organizing a church dinner for one hundred or more, Ortha and Ron worked tirelessly to make sure everyone was well fed and the kitchen was spotless. The list could go on and on," the church said in a press release

"We hope you will join us for this concert: to enjoy some great music, to support Canton’s Church & Community Program and all their good work, but most of all, to pay tribute to Ortha’s life of “faith in action.” Help us to build her steeple, so that Ortha—surely baking pies in some huge celestial kitchen—will be able to look down upon her beloved church and see what her legacy of love continues to accomplish," the email said.

Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.
