OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation Department will host the third annual Sandbar Classic Fishing Derby July 21 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of the Seaway Festival.
Anglers can register by species for bass, walleye, northern pike, or perch beginning Thursday, July 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dobisky Visitor’s Center or Hosmer’s Marina. Registration will also be offered the day of the derby from 6 to 7 a.m. at the marina.
The cost will be $5 per species, but anglers must register for at least two species. One fish per species can be submitted for weighing at Hosmer’s Marina.
Winners will be determined by weight, with length breaking a tie.
A youth division will be offered for bass and perch. Registration for youth 16 and younger will be $5. Youth can also register for the adult division.
“Each year, the tournament continues to grow and we hope that this year will be the best yet. We want to showcase the St. Lawrence River and its fantastic fishing,” said Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo.
“The goal is to get people out on the river and to take advantage of the river’s fishing. All the money collected will go to the winning anglers,” said Curatolo.
Prizes and awards have been provided by the family of the late Al O’Marah, along with the annual Al O’Marah “Lunker” award for the heaviest bass.
The first 90 participants to sign-up will receive a free T-shirt, courtesy of Algonquin Power.
“I would like to thank our sponsors, Algonquin Power, Cape Air and Hosmer’s Marina, for helping the department put on this derby,” Curatolo said.
