TAUNY's annual Sugaring Off Party Saturday in Canton

CANTON -- As maple season approaches, children and families are invited to celebrate sugaring as French-Canadian families would have done a century ago at TAUNY's annual Sugaring Off Party on Saturday, March 5 from 1 until 3 p.m.

A reading of “The Sugaring Off Party” by Jonathan London sets the tone, and then participants step into the book with a recreation of the house party led by fiddler Gretchen Koehler and her family who teach traditional French folk dances and songs, and share the secret to playing the spoons.

Local maple producer Art Hurlbut makes wax-on-snow, and there are crafts and snacks for everyone.

"Dancing with little kids and older folks and everyone in between is my favorite part of this program," says TAUNY's communication director Aviva Gold. "No one leaves here without a smile on their face."

Admission is free.

The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main St., downtown Canton. For more information visit tauny.org, email programs@tauny.org, or call 386-4289.
