CANTON – Maple sugaring time is coming to the North Country, and as part of year-long 25th anniversary celebrations, TAUNY is throwing a traditional sugaring-off party Saturday, March 5 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Children and families are invited to The TAUNY Center to celebrate maple sugaring season as French-Canadian families would have a century or more ago. Fiddlers Gretchen Koehler and Joel Foisy will help recreate a traditional house party.
They will teach French songs and folk dances, showing dancers how to "shuffle step" their way through a basic reel. Gretchen and Joel will be joined by their 8-year-old son Sylvain, a fiddler and step dancer who will offer his perspective on carrying on a living tradition. Local maple producer Art Hurlbut will be on hand to show how traditional "wax-on-snow" is prepared.
The event is free and open to the public.
