HANNAWA FALLS – Swimmers are invited to Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls at 8 a.m. Aug. 4 to “Swim a Mile for Hospice.”

The annual fundraiser for Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley is a non-competitive event that last year brought together over 70 recreational swimmers in their teens through their eighties.

Swimmers will be grouped by ability and will complete the mile course at their own pace.

“Safety is our top concern,” said event organizer Brad Catling. “We will have a fleet of kayaks, motorboats, lifeguards and official safety personnel on hand to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time.”

Each swimmer is asked to raise at least $100 for Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley -- youth swimmers age 14 to 17 are asked to raise $50. This includes the $25 registration fee.

Swimmers, boaters and other volunteers will enjoy a light breakfast and will receive a t-shirt and other tokens for their participation.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraisers including a round trip ticket from Ogdensburg to Boston on Cape Air, a SkyPad ALPHA2 seven-inch Android 4.0 tablet donated by The Computer Guys, and a special candlelight dinner for two at the Canoe Place Inn on Hannawa Pond.

In addition, the school whose students, as a group, raise the most money for Swim a Mile for Hospice will have a special trophy to display until the next year’s event. The name of the winning school is etched on the trophy each year. Last year, the winner was Potsdam Central School where the trophy has been displayed for the last 11 months.

Immediately following the swim and the awards ceremony, there will be a lunch cookout at The Canoe Place Inn. The cost of the brunch is $5. All are welcome.
