POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's chemistry department will hold the second annual Chemtoberfest with demonstrations, a chemistry magic show, "wizard training,” interactive activities, and snacks to honor National Chemistry Week.

Chemtoberfest will be Friday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tents will be set up at the college’s Minerva Plaza and in the plaza in front of the Barrington Student Union. The event is free for guests of all ages.

Demonstrations of the chemistry behind snacks like cotton candy, ice cream, candied apples and popcorn will be featured.

In addition, demonstrations about the cinema chemistry behind special effects seen in movies such as the "Harry Potter" series will include explanations on floo powder and magical sweets found in Honeydukes.

"You can be sure to expect mind-boggling demonstrations, take-home chemistry crafts, live guest performances, tons of free food, and maybe an explosion here or there," said event chair John C. Proetta.

The event is open to the campus community, their families and by invitation only, school groups.
