POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam will screen a film about the search for a sustainable community titled "Within Reach: A Journey to Find a Sustainable Community."
It will be shown at 7 p.m. on May 6 in Kellas Hall, room 103.
The film follows Ryan Mlyknarczyk and Mandy Creighton, who in 2008 left the San Francisco Bay Area on their bicycles, leaving all of their possessions behind. They gave up their house, jobs and cars, in search of a better, more sustainable life.
Along the way, they explored ecovillages, cohousing communities, co-op houses, communes, transition towns and their own principles and commitment.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion by a group of students who traveled to two ecovillages, one in Ithaca and the other in Findhorn, Scotland, in last summer as part of a sustainable communities course led by Heather Sullivan-Catlin of the sociology department.
