SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic set for Sept. 6

POTSDAM – The 24th Annual SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic is set for Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.

This year's event features two cash shootouts and a silent auction.

Registration is still open for the Scholarship Golf Classic, which is committed to raising funds and awareness for student scholarships at SUNY Potsdam.

The golf format is a shotgun start at 10 a.m., with a six-person scramble that includes four flights for men and one for women, to be determined by total team handicap. Golfers are encouraged to form their own sixsomes. Golfers of all abilities and handicaps are encouraged to participate.

The silent auction, one of the highlights of the day, concludes immediately following the tournament, around 5 p.m. The auction, which will be posted on the College's website, is open for all to place bids. Items range from various golf packages to gift certificates for area restaurants to artwork and other unique and in-demand items. All proceeds will benefit SUNY Potsdam's General Scholarship Fund.

Registration is $125 per person and includes a scholarship gift, 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, lunch, refreshments and a banquet dinner, and door, course and team prizes, which will be awarded in each flight. Pre-registration is necessary for all golfers.

Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations or sponsorships can be made online at www.potsdam.edu/golfclassic until Aug. 28.

Major sponsor for the second year is Northland Associates of Syracuse. Other sponsors include Casella Waste Services; Honeywell; Mach Architecture & Engineering, Inc.; SYSCO Foodservice of Albany, LLC; Renzi Brothers, Inc.; Time Warner Cable Business Class; and Usherwood Office Technology.

TJ Toyota of Potsdam is the sponsor of the $50,000 Shootout, and Canton-Potsdam Hospital is the sponsor of a $1 Million Shootout. Golf participants must qualify for a chance in each of these events.

In the Fox 101.5 Ball Drop, one lucky ticket holder will win half of the proceeds raised through the sale of numbered golf balls, which will be dropped on a practice green, with the closest to the hole winning. Tickets may be purchased on campus in the Fitness Center in Maxcy Hall or at the College Store in the Barrington Student Union, or in the community at the Potsdam Town and Country Club, the Massena Golf Club, or the Partridge Run Golf Course, Canton. Participation in the tournament is not required for a ticket purchase.

The 2011 Scholarship Golf Classic had a record-breaking year, raising more than $93,000 for the scholarship fund. Last year, 1,230 scholarship recipients were provided $2.2 million to support their SUNY Potsdam studies through the fund.
