AKWESASNE – The St Regis Mohawk Tribal Police are sponsoring their second annual Kids for Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Out of more than 80 kids who signed up, a total of 30 children between the ages of 10-17 and special needs children from the community of Akwesasne were selected to participate in this event.
The kids will learn boating safety, drug awareness, and different styles of fishing at Fountain’s Woods. The children will be rewarded with their own personal flotation devices, fishing poles, fishing tackle and other items.
This program is to promote drug awareness in the community and a way of reaching out to the children and getting them interested in a different sports and hobbies. It's also a way of giving back, and community policing. Professional fishermen from the area will help out and give presentations on fishing.
