ST. REGIS FALLS -- The Azure Mountain Friends will hold a benefit dinner featuring fire tower historian and author Marty Podskoch at the Deer Valley Trails Restaurant, 4677 Blue Mountain Rd., Aug. 10.

The buffet-style dinner will start at 6 p.m., followed by an Adirondack fire tower presentation by Podskoch at approximately 7 p.m.

This event will kick off a year of activities celebrating the centennial of the Azure Mountain fire tower, which turns 100 years old on July 29, 2018.

Admission to the dinner and presentation is $40 per person ($20 for the dinner plus a $20 donation to Azure Mountain Friends).

Reservations are required and can be made at centennial@azuremountain.org.

Those who wish to attend only the presentation may do so for a donation of $20 at the door. The donation supports the work of the Friends.

Azure Mountain Friends is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteers from throughout the North Country. The group was formed in 2001 in an effort to save the fire tower from removal and to restore it.

With the support and help of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the tower was formally re-opened to the public in September of 2003. Since then, the Friends have been placing volunteer stewards on the summit on most weekends between Memorial Day and Columbus Day.

Today, they continue to maintain the trail, the summit, and the fire tower so that hikers of all ages can enjoy the beautiful views and the serenity of the mountain for many years to come.

The Friends also provide scholarships to local college-bound students each year.
