POTSDAM -- St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Basket Program is gearing up for its annual distribution of holiday food families in need.
Last year the program helped served 107 families.
Items needed include turkeys and non-perishable foods, such as stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, vegetables, pie filling and canned milk.
Items will be accepted at St. Mary’s rectory, 17 Lawrence Avenue, until Nov. 22, when a sorting day will be held. On Nov. 23 Boy Scout Troop 77 will help with potato bagging.
Distribution will take place Nov. 25 with help from the Latter Day Saints.
Other organizations providing help include the Lions, Elks, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, PCS, Kiwanis and Key clubs.
The program distributes food to families who need it, regardless of religious beliefs.
Some of these are large families; many are elderly people who live alone and may be home-bound.
