POTSDAM -- The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley Sustainability Day will be hosted at Clarkson University beginning in the Student Center at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.

The event, which is free and open to the public, has been organized to inspire and foster a culture of sustainability on the campuses of the Associated Colleges, Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton, and SUNY Potsdam, in partnership with the wider community.

Members of the Akwesasne community will deliver the opening with a traditional Mohawk welcome.

North Country Public Radio Assistant News Director David Sommerstein will moderate an Associated Colleges leadership panel at 1:30 p.m. Clarkson President Tony Collins, SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran, SUNY Potsdam President Kristin G. Esterberg and St. Lawrence University Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs Karl K. Schonberg will speak on the opportunities and challenges to pursuing sustainability in the university sector.

Breakout sessions beginning at 2:30 p.m. will cover a wide range of topics across the spectrum of the three E's of sustainability: ecology, economy and equity.

Among the sessions are a campus garden, anaerobic digester and greenhouse tour; a student sustainability leadership panel; an interactive hunger workshop presented by GardenShare; the service-learning alternative spring break at the Ecovillage at Ithaca; a nature walk led by Clarkson University Professor and Chair of Biology Tom Langen; an open forum for students; a case study on The Land Institute; solar and social justice; a bike fix station demo; guided meditation; and green buildings and facilities.

Peter Bardaglio, a senior fellow at Second Nature, a non-profit committed to the promotion of sustainability in higher education, will deliver the keynote speech at 4 p.m.

After the keynote speech, a poster session and sustainability fair will be held in Clarkson's Andrew S. Schuler Educational Resources Center.

Numerous campus and community groups will be featured, including the Local Living Venture, St. Lawrence Land Trust and GardenShare.

Music will be provided by "Potsdam Mix," an ambient sound installation by Assistant Professor Jerod Sommerfeldt and his students at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam
