St. Lawrence Valley landowners can register for wildlife habitat workshop

CANTON -- St. Lawrence Valley landowners can register for a free wildlife habitat workshop Saturday, April 30, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Barn, 2043B State Highway 68.

Participants will learn about bird and wildlife-friendly management techniques for their property that benefit shrub land and young forest birds, such as Golden-winged Warblers and American Woodcock.

The workshop brings landowners together with experts on wildlife and habitat management. Participating landowners will hear from a series of presenters about wildlife they can attract through proper habitat management, the basics of Golden-winged Warbler habitat, and where they can find resources, tools and potential partners to help them plan for managing habitat to benefit wildlife on their property.

The presentation will be followed by a visit to a habitat demonstration site. This will allow participants to see quality early successional forest habitat and learn about restoring habitat to meet the needs of declining bird species dependent on this habitat type.

Resident birds will be in the midst of their breeding season, so participants should bring binoculars to get a little birding in while out visiting habitat sites.

The registration deadline is Thursday, April 28. Email Linnea Rowse at lrowse@audubon.org or call 782-7289 ext. 112. Arrive at 8:30 a.m. for registration and refreshments. The workshop is from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by lunch and a habitat demonstration site visit from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Free refreshments and lunch will be provided.

For those who can’t attend this workshop, another workshop will be offered on Saturday, June 25, at the Gouverneur Public Library, 60 Church St.
