CANTON -- Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University will host Christmas-themed concerts in December.

St. Lawrence University’s Laurentian Singers will offer their 16th annual Christmas Concert and Carol Sing from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 in Gunnison Chapel.

The “A European Union Christmas – Carols From Across the Continent” concert features traditional and composed carols from England, France, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland and Finland, featuring such composers as Gustav Holst (In the Bleak Midwinter), Jean Sibelius (En Etsi Valtaa Loistoa), Francisco Guerrero (A un Niño Llorando), Peter Cornelius (The Three Kings) and Stephen Hatfiled (Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle).

The program also includes music of J.S. Bach (Lobet den Herrn – Praise the Lord) and Morten Lauridsen (O Nata Lux – O born light of light).

Traditional carols include: People Look East; God Rest You Merry; Coventry Carol; Dormi, Dormi, O Bel Bambin and Infant Holy among others.

The concert will end with a carol sing with accompanist Barbara Phillips-Farley at the piano.

The String Orchestra will present "Mostly Mozart" on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.

The program selections include many diverse works composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), including the overture and aria from The Marriage of Figaro, the Turkish Rondo, Ave Verum Corpus, Symphony No. 25 in g minor, and others. Additional works not composed by Mozart are The Old Church, by Stephen Paulus, and Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid, by Luigi Boccherini.

Also featured on the program are three concerto movements, with soloists Barbara Phillips-Farley, Shihao Li, and Jill Rubio, performing the Piano Concerto #8 in C Major, Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major, and Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major, respectively.

The String Orchestra is directed by Christian Hosmer, and includes student and faculty musicians from SLU as well as the surrounding local area.
