CANTON — St. Lawrence University’s Chaplain’s Office will present its eighth-annual Bach Marathon from 1:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public, and guests are welcome to come and go as they please.
The event will celebrate the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach and Johann Christoph Bach.
The concert will feature the talents of St. Lawrence University’s Organist and Musician-In-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor as well as musicians from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, Organist Rebecca MacKellar from Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam, and several other invited guest.
Several St. Lawrence students will perform as soloists during the concert, including senior Shihao Li ’17 of Newark, Delaware, who will perform Bach’s “Double Violin Concerto” along with Christian Hosmer, director of string ensembles. Associate professor of philosophy Laura Rediehs will also perform a flute selection along with a quartet of stringed instruments.
Beginning at 2:40 p.m., Goldsmith Proctor will perform the “Praeludium und Fuge” in b minor. At 3 p.m., an ensemble of nine highly skilled instrumentalists will play the same work in a new arrangement. From two hands-two feet to eighteen hands-eighteen feet, the work will be featured with new sounds filling the chapel.
