St. Lawrence University Wind Ensemble spring concert Tuesday in Canton

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Wind Ensemble’s spring concert, set for 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, will feature a full range of musical pieces including several selected from film scores.

An array of John Williams’ compositions will be played alongside selections from Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws as a tribute to music writer Leonard Bernstein.

Led by director Kyle Tupper, the Wind Ensemble is joined this year by Michael Farley, associate professor of music, as an assistant director. The ensemble is comprised of both St. Lawrence students and local Canton community members, all of whom have been preparing for the concert since late January.

“We try to have a little bit of something for everyone at the concerts,” said Kayla Trainer ’16 of Chateaugay, New York, a seventh-semester student member of the ensemble. “This semester, we’re doing ‘Madstop Twostep’ by Arthur Frackenpohl. Noticeably, Madstop is Potsdam backwards, and the melody features a lot of themes that have to do with Potsdam in general (like 13676 as a main melody in the middle of the piece),” she said. “That piece is a local favorite.”

Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact 229-5166 or visit www.stlawu.edu/music.
