CANTON — Weave News will host a special conference at St. Lawrence University from Sept. 22 to 24 to mark their 10th anniversary of grassroots media-making.

Under the theme, “Citizen Journalism as Activism: From Local to Global,” the conference will spotlight work in investigative citizen journalism and critical media education. The event will also feature a series of hands-on workshops and discussion panels designed to help attendees develop key investigative and multimedia skills that are part of the citizen journalist toolbox.

“These days understanding how to be a critical and savvy media consumer is more important than ever, and so is knowing how to create media in ways that can contribute to positive social change,” said John Collins, founder and director of Weave News and professor of global studies at St. Lawrence. “We’re excited to be able to host this conference and push forward the conversation in our region surrounding these issues.”

Workshops will be facilitated by media scholars, practitioners and students from throughout the region. A sampling of topics will include: Critical Media in the Classroom, Using the Camera to Create Change, and Public Relations Activism.

The workshops and others are geared toward action-based learning for teachers to bring to their classrooms and citizens in their daily lives.

The keynote speech will be given by Bill Yousman, the former managing director of the Media Education Foundation and the current director of the graduate program in media literacy and digital culture at Sacred Heart University, where he is an assistant professor in the School of Communication and Media Arts.

The 10th Anniversary Conference will also include a film screening and Q&A with director Quester Hannah as well as a networking reception with fellow citizen journalists and attendees.

Artist and activist Taina Asili, who was recently featured in Rolling Stone, will conduct workshop on social media video-making during the conference, then close the weekend with a live performance with La Banda Rebelde in the St. Lawrence University Launders Underground.

These events are included with conference registration.

“This is going to be a dynamic weekend of learning, networking, and activism,” said Collins. “Participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to promote citizen engagement in their own communities.”

The deadline for registration is Sept. 1. There is a $20 registration fee. Additional contributions will also be accepted. To register, visit www.stlawu.edu/forms/weave-news-conference-registration.
