CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Richard F. Brush Art Gallery will present two new art installations beginning on Oct 19 and Oct. 22.

The gallery will come to life on Thursday Oct. 22, with the opening of “Pop Art: Highlights from the Permanent Collection.” The exhibit will feature selected Pop art works from 1960s and 1970s culture in Great Britain and the United States.

Over the course of two years, several gallery staff collected key works from the permanent collection to showcase later this month. With the help of alumna Sarah Bent ’15, the team has also created interpretive text panels to be featured on-site in the gallery.

Images range from classic soup cans and other basic objects to visual representations of social commentary. Highlights of the Pop Art exhibit include photographs of New York City’s 1960s Lower East Side and two underrepresented collections of diversity in the creative era. The final showcase is a direct result of student and faculty collaboration toward further education.

St. Lawrence University senior Emily Shrope ’16 took her artistic collection one step further. The art and art history major from Rainbow Lake, New York, has curated her own gallery exhibit, titled “The Art of Appropriation.” Emily’s show will run from Sunday, Oct. 19, through the rest of the Fall 2015 semester in tandem with Pop Art.

“Emily curated (the show) herself from the permanent collection over the summer,” said Catherine Tedford, director of the Brush Art Gallery. “I don't get that many students asking to curate shows, so I was happy to make it work!”

At 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, Emily will offer an exhibition tour, outlining the themes and components of her show. Art appropriation is a concept of Western art in which original symbols or objects are transformed in meaning and context. All of the selected works featured in Emily’s show will highlight this idea of artistic appropriation. Through this collection, she explores the adaptations and intersections of cultures around the world.
