CANTON -- St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union will hold their fifth Community Shred Day Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. until noon.

The free event will take place at 33 Court St.

“St. Lawrence takes ID theft very seriously and this free event is an important way for the Credit Union to help protect the community from this growing problem,” said St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union CEO Todd Mashaw. “Community Shred Day is a convenient and secure way to safely dispose of invoices, tax returns, paycheck stubs and other personal documents that can be used by identity thieves to commit fraud.”

Shred-It provides a mobile shredding truck on-site to securely and efficiently destroy confidential information. Three-ring binders or hanging files are not allowed and there is a limit of 10 boxes per auto. Containers used to transport documents will be returned to those taking advantage of this free service.

“Identity theft topped the Federal Trade Commission’s national ranking of consumer complaints for the 15th consecutive year,” a statement from the credit union said. “Identity theft is a crime that occurs when someone uses personally identifying information, such as name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without permission. Shredding personal documents is an excellent way to combat ID Fraud.”
