St. Lawrence County surrogate judge candidate to appear in WCKN Monday and Tuesday nights

POTSDAM -- North Country Matters, the local public affairs video magazine produced by WCKN under the direction of Dan Dullea of the Center of Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University, has begun filming new shows for the fall semester.

As is the NCM practice, some of the fall shows will be Conversations with Candidates, a voter education series designed to introduce voters to some of the candidates running for public office. The conversations ask each candidate to explain his or her positions, records, and ideas outside of the spin cycle of the 30-second campaign ad and the discussion constrains of the political debate format.

Aired on WCKN at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15 and 16, the first show is a conversation with John F. Richey, the only candidate for the St. Lawrence County Surrogate Court judgeship. Richey sat down with NCM host Donna Seymour a member of the St. Lawrence County Branch of the American Association of University Women, and Liam Hunt, Professor Emeritus of History at St. Lawrence University and a member of the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County.

Richey explores the history and nature of Surrogate’s Court, the types of cases it hears, the kinds of county courts we have, and how judges are elected in New York State. The YouTube link for this show is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrpkarBJLvk.

The second new show broadcast at 8 p.m. is a conversation with Heather Sullivan-Catlin who was the lead researcher and author of St. Lawrence County Community Food Security Assessment done in partnership with GardenShare. The report looks into the extent of hunger in our county, barriers to food access, and the resources available to residents in need.

Sullivan-Catlin, an Associate Professor of Sociology at SUNY Potsdam, has long been interested in family and community issues. She served as president of GardenShare, a non-profit community food security organization, from 2008-13. She discussed her findings with Seymour, the key issues about food insecurity and hunger in St. Lawrence County, and some of the report’s recommendations for addressing those needs.
