St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club's 47th Gem & Mineral Show and Swap Saturday and Sunday in Madrid

MADRID -- The St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club will hold the 47th annual free “Gem & Mineral Show and Swap” Saturday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 25 at the municipal park and community center.

The show will include handcrafted jewelry, gemstone beads, jewelry making supplies, and free lessons, crystals, fossils, and mineral specimens, handcrafted gift items, free mineral kits for kids and mineral collecting trips.

A free fluorescent mineral hunt for kids will be Friday at dusk. A talk on fluorescent minerals by Dino Zack will begin at 8:30 p.m. Kids, age 11 or younger will be able to borrow a portable black light to search for samples of fluorescent minerals, some of which can be taken home.

Dave Millis will offer free wire-wrapping lessons this year. Millis will give free lessons each day, with a materials charge.

The popular geode display and geode cracker will return this year. Geodes are hollow rocks that contain crystals. The customer may purchase a geode, then be the first person to see the crystals inside as it is split in half.

A food concession stand will open Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday after 9 a.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, and snow cones will be available.

An auction of minerals will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

A two-foot tall Brazilian amethyst “cathedral” will be raffled, with the winning ticket to be drawn at 2 p.m. Sunday.

A guided field trip will visit Power’s farm to search for black tourmaline and quartz crystals Saturday at 9 a.m. Another trip will visit Bush farm to collect brown tourmaline and tremolite Sunday at 9 a.m. Trips will be $5.
