St. Lawrence County holds Maple Syrup Weekends in Norwood, Canton, Madrid, Dekalb, Colton and Hermon
As St. Lawrence County ramps up for the maple-sugaring season, several community events are planned to celebrate the North Country staple.
Maple weekends will be held March 16 and 17 and March 23 and 24 in St. Lawrence County, with events and open houses at various local producers and organizations.Fine-n-dandy, 2620 County Route 35, Norwood, owned by Donald Finen, will host an open house with a walk in the woods, a demonstration and free samples March 23 and 24.
Finen Maple Products, 529 Austin Ridge Rd., Norwood, owned by Jim and Margaret Finen, will give out free samples and buggy rides through the woods, along with gift baskets and syrup for sale March 16, 17 and 23.
TAUNY, 53 Main St., Canton, will host a party to celebrate sugaring March 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. “The Sugaring Off Party” by Jonathan London will be read, followed by dances, songs, playing the spoons and wax-on-snow treats. RSVP at 386-4289 or [email protected].
Sweeter Creations Sugar House, 348 Pearson Rd., Madrid, owned by Michael and Debra Kenny, will give demonstrations and have products for sale March 16, 17, 23 and 24.
The Cornell Cooperative Extension, 2043B State Highway 68, Canton, will host a “maple magic” program for kids ages three to five March 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. For $5 kids can observe sap being turned into syrup, learn how to tap trees and visit a sugarhouse. Register with Amy at 379-9192.
The Orebed Sugar Shack, 503 Ore Bed Rd., DeKalb Junction, owned by Jeff and Lori Jenness will offer face painting and tours along with demonstrations and free samples March 16, 17, 23 and 24.
The Local Living Venture will host a traditional maple sugaring party March 16, starting at 10 a.m. For $5 participants will tap the sugar grove at Sow’s Ear Farm in Canton with a hand-drilled tap and then watch horses transport the sugar for boiling. Tupper’s Hilltop Maple Treats, 760 St. Hwy 68, Canton, owned by Kenneth and Jean Tupper, will offer demonstrations.
High Hills Masonic Lodge, Main Street, Colton, will host a pancake breakfast to celebrate Maple Weekend March 26 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. An all you can eat pancake breakfast with fresh maple syrup will be $7 for adults or $6 for seniors.
Woody’s Maple, 418 Underwood Road, Hermon, owned by James Woodrow, will offer demonstrations and refreshments March 16, 17, 23 and 24.
