DEC staffer to discuss watershed management at Waddington meeting of Environmental Management Council

WADDINGTON -- The St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council’s April meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 17 in the basement meeting room of the Waddington Hepburn Library, 30 Main St.

The public is invited to attend.

A representative from the state Depart,ent of Environmental Conservation will discuss watershed management issues and best practices for both the St. Lawrence River watershed and smaller watersheds for creeks and streams in St. Lawrence County.

Watershed management is a topic EMC will be emphasizing in its work plan this year.

The EMC’s mission is to advise the county Board of Legislators about environmental matters affecting the county and to work cooperatively with the county Planning Office to foster public understanding of environmental issues. Its 15 volunteer members are appointed by the Board of Legislators.

As part of its public educational function, the EMC usually has a speaker at our monthly meetings. Recently, the EMC has heard speakers on topics including:

· The proposed remediation plan for the Grasse River in Massena

· Solid Waste planning in the tri-county region (Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence)

· Recent activities conducted by the St Regis Mohawk Tribe Environmental Division

· Development of the St Lawrence Flatland Unit Management Plan

· St. Lawrence County Recreational Trails Advisory Board on a proposed multi-use trail system

· Current information about the Massena Remedial Action Plan

· NYSOPRHP operations involving Black Lake

· Discussion of fishing regulations and wildlife issues in DEC Region 6

· Siting issues related to wind energy facilities and Article X
