St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council meets in Canton Wednesday

CANTON -- The next meeting of the St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council will take place Wednesday, May 20, at 6 p.m. at the Board of Legislators Chamber, 48 Court St.

The speaker will be Paul Hetzler, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator at St. Lawrence County Cornell Cooperative Extension. He has been working to educate the public about the hazards involved with the eventual arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive beetle that will kill all our ash trees.

In local environmental news:

· The EMC partnered with the Massena Nature Center, SUNY ESF Ranger School and Massena High School to conduct an “Ash Tree ID” project at the Nature Center on April 29. For more information, see http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/Students-Mark-Ash-Trees-In-State-Park-301741201.html

· The EMC is partnering with the Development Authority of the North Country and the SLC Solid Waste Department to conduct “Move Out Week” recycling events at Clarkson (April 27 – May 8); St. Lawrence University (May 1 – May 29); SUNY Canton (May 4 – May 8); and SUNY Potsdam (May 11 – 15). The purpose of these events is to reclaim and re-use or recycle many of the items that college students typically throw out when they leave school for the summer / when they graduate.

·The EMC is partnering with the Development Authority of the North Country, the SLC Solid Waste Department and the SLC Sheriff’s Department to conduct a “Household Hazardous Waste Collection” event at the Human Services Center in Canton on Saturday May 30th. See attached flier for information.
