St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg hosts pancake dinner Tuesday

OGDENSBURG -- St. John’s Episcopal Church, corner of Caroline and Knox streets, will observe their custom of a pancake supper on Feb. 9.

They will serve pancakes and sausages from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall.

There will be a Mardi Gras theme.

A freewill offering will be accepted but not expected.

Fat or Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent begins.

Pancakes enables the faithful, in years past, to use up the lard (or fat) before the season of abstinence begins,” the church said. “In Lent Christians are to eat ‘thin.’”

The official name for this day is “Shrove Tuesday” and is derived from the Old English word “shrive” or to forgive. “Forgiveness Tuesday” is the traditional day for individual confession to a priest. Ash Wednesday, the first day of the 40 weekdays before Easter, with its proper liturgy, was a day of public penitence for common sins, the church said.
