The Orthodox Christian Mission at SUNY Potsdam presents Chaplin John Eric Malcom speaking on “The Reintegration of Military Personnel Returning from Combat: A Spiritual Perspective” Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in The Forum inside Barrington Student Union at SUNY Potsdam.
The event is free and open to the public.
Soldiers returning from combat face complex issues while trying to integrate back into civilian life. Often they have difficulties reconciling religious beliefs with the violence of combat. Understanding this not only helps the soldiers after they return home, but also aids those who care about soldiers in helping their loved ones process the events that they have experienced.
Chaplains often seek to work with soldiers and their families in order to help them deal with these issues before, during and after deployment.
After completing ROTC, Malcom was commissioned as an Infantry Officer and sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he attended the Infantry Officer’s Basic Course, Jump School and Ranger School. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in 2006 and deployed to Iraq with the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
After returning from his 15-month deployment, Chaplin Malcom entered the Chaplain Candidacy Program and attended Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Penn. Fr. John, as he is known outside of military circles, is married and serves as a second priest at Saint Mary’s Russian Orthodox Church in Syracuse, and as a Reserve Chaplain.
