CANTON -- St. Lawrence University’s Noon in the Chapel will celebrate Black History Month by performing a concert of African-American spirituals. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.
The concert will feature Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, St. Lawrence’s organist and musician-in-residence who will play the 1926 Estey Pipe Organ, feature the Ad Hoc Singers Kate Waters and Julia Pomainville.[img_assist|nid=192053|title=|desc=|link=url|url=http://northcountrynow.com/submitting-photo|align=right|width=180|height=149]
During the performance, there will be teachings about the evolution of spirituals from the time West Africans were brought to the American colonies until around 1905. The use of codes in the spirituals helped people escape to freedom.
Parking for chapel events will be in H-Lot, across from Griffiths Arts Center and next to Vilas Hall. There also will be a drop-off location and limited handicapped parking spaces in front of Richardson Hall and at the front of the chapel.
