POTSDAM – Registration for fall courses is well underway at SOAR. This fall, over 50 courses are being offered by volunteer SOAR presenters, with at least one new course starting each week of the fall 10-week semester.

Skills building courses and activities include: watercolor, drawing, Japanese calligraphy, stained glass craft, contract bridge, Mah Jongg, Ken Ken, Karate, Tai-Chi, crew rowing, writing for self, writing biography, high school math review, vintage jewelry and coins, first aid and CPR, creating greeting cards, and knitting.

Courses on North Country topics include: local mosses and mushrooms (field trip), trees, plants, black fly control, Hazel Tyrell bird carver, Tiffany windows at Trinity Episcopal (Potsdam), Old Order Amish, our town histories, Fort Drum, visiting Montreal, Potsdam sandstone, and historical archaeology of the Adirondacks.

Rounding out the fall semester SOAR curriculum are other courses on a wide variety of topics: current events, pre and post election analysis, democracy and the first amendment, musical tunes, Metropolitan Opera, music boxes and music machines, Lincoln's war years, First Ladies, Hospice caregiver program, 1918 flu epidemic, Romeo and Juliet (page and stage), modern short stories, forensic science, extracting DNA, cryptography, The Norse (Viking weapons and armor), Dead Sea Scrolls, the Arab world, global climate (learning from the deep past), Earth and climate, travelogues, and Women's place.

SOAR is a lifelong learning group in the North Country sponsored by SUNY Potsdam and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network. The yearly membership fee of $65 is due at the time of fall registration and it allows members to take as many courses as they want–both in the fall and in the following spring semester.

This fall about half of the SOAR classes are held on the SUNY Potsdam campus (a parking pass is provided with registration). The rest are located at public lands and places. All classes are held during daylight hours.

Besides attending classes, members also have the opportunity, at extra cost, to participate in two special events this fall semester. The first is a mid-semester luncheon on Oct. 20 at The Lobster House in Norwood (where SOAR members get to "meet the chef" as well as to dine on entrées from his menu). The second is on Nov. 19, when SOAR celebrates the end of another great semester with a luncheon at SUNY Potsdam for SOAR members and guests.
