CANTON -- The Cornell Cooperative Extension, 2043B State Highway 68, will sponsor several events for youth during the upcoming winter break from Feb. 21-24.

Class topics include snowshoeing & wildlife tracking, outdoor survival & quinzee Building, ice fishing & tip-up Building, desserts, desserts & more desserts, youth sewing class, the pizza process, and dogs, dogs and more.

Youth registered for a morning and afternoon class are welcome to bring a bag lunch for the noon break. Staff supervision will be provided.

• Snowshoeing & Wildlife Tracking: Tuesday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. until noon with Nicki Hamilton-Honey & Andrew Carpino, 4-H Educators. Come join us for a fun and adventurous snowshoe tour of the Extension Learning Farm.We will spend time exploring the surrounding area for some of our North Country Wildlife. Discover methods to spot wildlife and their signs even in the cold winter months. There will be a short introduction to snowshoeing before heading outside. Bring layers of warm clothing and winter boots, since this class will have an outdoors component. Snowshoes will be provided for those who don’t have any. Fee is $5. Indicate if participant needs snowshoes when registering.

• Outdoor Survival & Quinzee Building: Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1-3 p.m. with Andrew Carpino and Nicki Hamilton-Honey, 4-H Educators. Participants will learn the basic steps of outdoor survival. After a short classroom instruction time participants will practice the skills in the Extension Learning Farm Woods. Bring layers of warm clothing and footwear since this class will have an outdoor component. Open to all ages. Fee is $5 per person.

• Ice Fishing & Tip-Up Building: Wednesday, Feb. 22, 10 a.m.-noon with Nicki Hamilton-Honey and Andrew Carpino, 4-H Educators. Join us in building a tip-up to use on the Extension Farm pond and to take home. Bring layers of warm clothing and winter boots since weather permitting participants will get a chance to ice fish. Open to all ages. Fee is $10.

• Desserts, Desserts & More Desserts: Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1-3 p.m. with Misty Cisneros, nutrition educator. Participants will make desserts and play games will food is cooking. The cost is $5 per person.

• Youth Sewing Class: Thursday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m.-noon with Casey Caswell, youth and family lead and Amy Sands, 4-H educator. Class is designed for youth with some experience operating a sewing machine. Participants will make an apron for cooking, woodworking and or gardening. This apron can be used as a sewing project for presenting at the county fair. Bring own sewing machine, fabric scissors, pins, ruler or tape measure, and three pieces of material cut into three different sizes, rectangular piece 12”X15” another 8”X10” and one 12”X3” and matching thread. Sturdy polyester blend material is suggested. Denim or canvas is not recommended for this project. The fee is $5 per person.

• The Pizza Process: Thursday, Feb. 23, 1-3 p.m. with Melissa D’Angelo and Juan Perez, nutrition educators. Learn how to make to make a customized pizza pie from scratch? Through hands on experience participants will learn the science behind pizza dough, the nutritional value of their favorite toppings and the many options that go into creating this Italian favorite. Participants will engage in games like Human Machine, Change Three Things and Opposite Hunt while pizzas cook. The fee is $10 per person.

• Dogs, Dogs and More: Friday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. until noon with Maureen Ring, 4-H Dog Club leader, registered veterinary technician and owner of 4 Paws Training. She will discuss proper behavior when around other dogs, what people should or shouldn’t do around strange dogs, what to do with dogs both outside and in vehicles, dog body language and other dog related topics. Question and answer session planned. Participants will make dog treats to take home to their dogs. Open to anyone with an interest in dog behavior management. The fee is $5.
