CANTON — St. Lawrence University students are preparing to “Face-Off With Hunger” in the North Country by selling T-shirts and holding food drives during two upcoming Saints men’s hockey games.

The "Face-off With Hunger" program is a link between St. Lawrence University and the local Canton community, which aims to bring support to those in need.

The event is being sponsored by St. Lawrence’s Center for Civic Engagement ad the men’s hockey and lacrosse teams.

The St. Lawrence students who live in the Center for Civic Engagement theme house and are helping to organize the event are Ross McMullan, Patrick Sullivan, Jeremy Vautour, and Kyle McDonald.

According to the center, one in six Americans face hunger. In St. Lawrence County specifically, 12.5 percent of residents deal with food insecurity, which means they are unsure where their next meal might come from.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 and 15, students will collect non-perishable food items at Appleton Arena during the Saints Men's Hockey games against Harvard and Dartmouth. All donations will benefit the Canton Church and Community Program directly. Game attendance is not required.

In addition to the food drive, students are now selling "Face-off with Hunger" t-shirts for $10 every weekday leading up to the games in the Sullivan Student Center from noon to 2 p.m. Food donations also will be accepted Friday afternoon until 2 in the Student Center.
