SLU offers membership in a variety of music-making experiences to community.

CANTON - A variety of music-making experiences is available to the North Country community, through membership in St. Lawrence University's ensembles. Several are seeking new members for the spring semester.

• University Chorus - As Canton's community chorus, University Chorus combines the vocal talents of students, faculty, staff and community members, performing a varied repertoire, often with instrumental accompaniment. This year, the University Chorus will perform works written for 19th-century church choirs and singing societies, by composers including Mendelssohn, Brahms, Elgar, Stainer and others. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. starting January 24 in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center. For membership information contact director Barry Torres at 229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu. New members will be accepted until January 31.

• String Orchestra - This semester, the String Orchestra will prepare "A Night on Broadway," featuring music from various well-known musicals, such as Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Chess, Mamma Mia, Rent, Wicked and others, with guest vocalists. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall, Griffiths Arts Center, starting February 1. Auditions will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25, 7 to 8 p.m., in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall. For more information contact director Chris Hosmer at cello@twcny.rr.com.

• Rhythm and Roots: Femme Fatale - Singers, string players, pianists, percussionists, guitarists, bass players and sound people are invited to explore music by women performer/songwriters such as Feist, Laura Nyro, Metric, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Fiona Apple and Garbage. Auditions will be held Tuesday, Jan. 24, and Thursday, Jan. 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Underground, Noble Center 001. Rehearsals are 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. • Wind Ensemble - The ensemble pursues an eclectic mix of music for the wind band repertoire, including a march, an Ellington medley and a blend of favorites as determined by the members of the ensemble. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Underground, Noble Center 001. Auditions are Monday, Jan. 23, and Wednesday, Jan. 25, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Underground.
