CANTON -- To increase awareness of the impact that breast cancer is having on the campus community, a group at St. Lawrence University wants to offer educational opportunities about the disease, increase the awareness of the impact it is having on society, and offer support to those who are trying to cope with this reality.

Through Oct. 8, a number of athletic events at the university will strive to bring awareness and fundraising efforts for this cause, via halftime contests, business sponsorships, and selling of merchandise. Student athletes will be wearing pink.

There will also be a panel discussion.

Here is the schedule of events for 2011 Power of Pink Week:

• Tuesday, Oct. 4: Volleyball vs. SUNY Potsdam, 7 p.m., Burkman Gymnasium

• Wednesday, Oct. 5, Speaker Andrea Nouryeh, Winston Room in the Student Center, 7 p.m., “The Big C Battle: Heeding the Call, Waging the Campaign, and Surviving Collateral Damage”

• Friday, Oct. 7, Men’s Hockey vs. Ferris State, 7 p.m., Appleton Arena

• Saturday, Oct. 8, Women’s Cross Country, 11 a.m. and Men’s Cross Country, noon, Hoffman Cross Country Course; Women’s Soccer vs. William Smith, 3 p.m., MacAllaster Field.

At each event there will be pink merchandise for sale and t-shirt sales, and there will be raffle tickets for gift certificates from many Canton businesses.

All proceeds are being donated to the Governeur Business Women (http://www.gouverneurbreastcancerwalk.com/).
