CANTON -- Rev. Dr. Shaun Whitehead, associate chaplain at St. Lawrence University, will serve as the guest minister at Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 ½ East Main St., on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 a.m.

In a sermon entitled "Mercy Meets the Great Divide," Whitehead will discuss how to be a Good Samaritan towards those different from us. How can we show compassion to our neighbors across the many divisions that separate us? (race, culture, religion, etc.)

Originally from Chicago, Ill., Whitehead is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and is an active member of the UCC African American Women in Ministry. She ministers to students, faculty, staff and the broader community.

Whitehead is the pastor of the weekly gospel service, an inclusive and welcoming Christian community. She also directs the Community Gospel Choir. She founded “Got Spirit?” the annual Gospel Music Workshop and Concert held annually at St. Lawrence.

Before full time ministry, she worked in Chicago’s radio industry for 14 years. As a preacher, writer and singer, Whitehead focuses her work on breaking down barriers and building relationships that are inclusive, reconciling and affirming.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton welcomes all to Sunday services and religious education for children at 10:30 am. Info: www.uucantonny.org.
